- The Cutting and Sewing of Alms Bowl Holders and Bags

- Embroidery, Crocheting, and Hand Stitching ex. Ceremonial Fans, Monk Handbags, Crotched Alms Bowl Holders, and Alms Bowl Stand Covers

The undertaking of our cutting and sewing all robes will be in accordance with the Buddhist Monastic Code (Vinaya) *2-layered Outer Robes with every set of triple robes - the same as offered to the Lord Buddha from his disciple Ananda* and additional items will be held up to standards of experienced monks (Aajahns) from forest temples, such as: 9 section upper robes assembled by french (overlapping) seams along with corresponding 2-layer upper robes, and 5 section lower robes, assembled in the same manner as the upper robes.

Triple Robe Sets of Dhutanga Kamathan consists of a 9 section Upper Robe, 2-layered, 9 section Outer Robe with every set.  If you require a 5, 7, or 11 section Upper Robe, or one with none at all (a triple robe set with upper robes), it will be special ordered (if needed by a certain date it must be ordered ahead of time).

A standard or full set of robes is an Ordination Triple Robe set consisting of: a 2-layerd Outer Robe that can be used right away and is necessary for formal activities, 1.  An Upper Robe 2.  A 2-layered Outer Robe 3. A sectioned or non-section Lower Robe 4. A fitted Shoulder Cloth 5. A Waist Tie Cloth 6. A Waistband 7. A Spare Lower Robe 8. An Offering Cloth

A Spare Robe Set is one with one keeps for occasions when formal attire is not necessary (inside one's dwelling, no official Sangha affairs going on).  It consists of 1. An Upper Robe 2.  A non-section Lower Robe 3. A Shoulder Cloth.

Robe Cloth of Dhutanga Kamathan is entirely 100%, but we also have available for use:

1.  Muslin - a thin cotton cloth that is the most popular offered to Buddhist monks.  It is dyed, easily washed, and dries quickly.

2.  Poplin No. 10,000 - a cotton cloth thicker than Muslin, and for the most part, is used in the making of lower robes.  This is because by following the Vinaya the lower robe should be one layer only; therefore, it should be thicker so it will not shamefully worn.

3.  Raw Cotton - the thickest cotton cloth.  If interested, one must order ahead of time, because it isn't very widely used by Buddhist monks in Thailand, due to the fact that it is difficult to wash, dries slowly and is heavy.

4.  Indian Voille - this thinnest cotton cloth has a texture similar to that used in mosquito nets, because it is woven with the fibers spaced a little further apart.  It comes in the color white only and is dyed afterwards.  It's somewhat unstable as it loosely woven, and one should be cautious of sharp objects or objects that can snag it.  It may be an issue that the dye bleeds out afterwards, and due to that one should dye it regularly, but the good thing about it is it's thinness.

5.  Swiss Cotton - is a cloth similar in thinness and weight to Indian Voille.  It is the most soft, and is dyed at the factory.  It uses weaving technology and is not unstable arranging around the body.  It is standardized, and most importantly, the dye will not bleed out from the cloth.

6.  Silk - finely crafted, handwoven silk from the Northeast region of Thailand (Isaan).

*The method of selecting and offering a Triple Robe - one should know which temple uses what color.  If not specified, it can be offered as a general gift to the Sangha.  One should offer the standard size or that of 2m by 3m(6.6ft by 9.8ft),  is ok, but if one is going to offer the triple robe specifically one should use the height of the particular monk as a guide (height plus an additional 35cm):

1.  A monk with a height of 160cm to 170cm (5.2ft - 5.6ft) would require a robe around 1.9m (6.2ft), 2x3m (6.6ft by 9.8ft), 2.1m (6.9ft) or 2m (6.6ft).

2.  A monk with a height of 170cm to 180cm (5.6ft - 5.9ft) would require a robe around 2x3m, 2.1m (6.9ft), 2.2m (7.2ft) or 2.1m (6.9ft).

3.  A monk with a height of 180cm (5.9ft) or more would more than likely require a robe around 2.2m (7.2ft)

The standard Triple Robe sizes of Dhutanga Kamathan are:

1.  Height - 1.9x3.0m or 1 meter, 90 cm (6.2ft by 9.8ft)

2.  Height - 2x3m or 2 meters (6.6ft by 9.8ft)

3. Height - 2.1x3.2m or 2 meters, 10 centimeters (6.9ft by 10.5ft)

4.  Height - 2.2x3.3m or 2 meters, 20 centimeters (7.2ft by 10.5ft)
