จีวร หมายถึง เครื่องนุ่งห่มของภิกษุสามเณรในพุทธศาสนา เป็นผ้าที่ต้องตัดขาด ๙ ชิ้น แต่ละชิ้นเรียกว่า ขัณฑ์ (เป็นที่มาของ จีวร ๙ ขัณฑ์) แล้วจึงนำมาเย็บต่อกันเป็นหนึ่งผืน แบบลายคันนา มีชื่อเรียกเฉพาะว่า อุตราสงฆ์

  Upper Robe (Uttarāsaṅga) (Thai 'Chiwan')

  The Upper Robe is a large piece of rectangular cloth that protects it's wearer from the elements, insect bites, etc., and has a variety of uses.  It is used by both novice monks and fully ordained monks in the Buddhist tradition.  It must be cut from at least 5 to 9 sections - each section known as a khaṇḍa, which are then sewn together and completed by a border.  The official name for this is the Uttarāsaṅga.
